🌿 What was the best part of volunteering?

Honestly, it’s hard to pick just one thing — every week felt different! I loved how flexible everything was; our days adapted to our energy, the weather, and what felt right. One day we’d be in the garden, the next we’d be learning something completely new.
I got to try so many firsts — from growing food to making natural products — and I met some amazing people along the way. Living close to nature, sharing meals, and always having something delicious to take home felt so wholesome.
One of the highlights was having my family and friends visit and see what life in Nagyszékely was like. Plus, I got to spend time near my grandfather, which made it all even more special. 💚

🍃 What did I learn (and how did I change)?

I picked up a bit of everything — like how most “weeds” are actually edible, how herbs can heal, and how to preserve food for winter. I learned about trees, fungi, permaculture, and even how to build with clay. I tried basket weaving, sewing, archery, horse riding… and yes, I helped care for animals too. 🐐
My Hungarian got better, my cooking improved, and I discovered that living in a tent and using an outdoor toilet isn’t as scary as it sounds.

I also got to know the Krishna community and new ways of thinking about the connection between humans, plants, and animals — super eye-opening. 🌸

🌻 How did it change me?

First, my relationship with food totally shifted. Seeing where it comes from — and being part of every step, even the hard ones — made me value it so much more. I don’t think I’ll ever see meat or meals the same way again.

Second, I got a clearer idea of the kind of life I want: something slower, more intentional, maybe even in an ecovillage rather than a city.

And finally, my view of Hungary changed. Before, I only saw the political side. Now, I’ve met people, heard stories, and seen how many “Hungarys” there really are — open-minded, creative, full of contradictions but also kindness.
The distance between Hungary and Belgium feels smaller now — like I found a bridge between two homes. 🌍
